Pirin and Rila Mountains – periglacial processes, 2024 November

During the first days of November a field campaign was organized in the Pirin and Rila mountains, in Bulgaria, for maintenance and download of the temperature logger network and terrain mapping using an UAV.
In the central area of the Pirin Mts temperature loggers are placed in the frontal moraines of the small perennial ice patches that still exist (Banski Suhodol, Golemya Kazan Cirques) and in rock glaciers in the Banderitsa valley. In the Rila Mts two rock glaciers in the Malovitsa valley are monitored.
During the field campaign all 11 data loggers were visited, and data were downloaded. Three data loggers could not be downloaded and were replace with new ones. Two out of the six working data loggers were also replaced with new ones and maintenance work has been performed on the logger’s anchoring system where necessary.
