Danube field work, 2023 October

In October 2023 a field campaign was organised to study the terraces of the Danube River from the Iron Gates to the western part of the Oltenia Plain. Outcrops of thick gravely sediments deposited and subsequently abandoned by the incising Danube were studied at different elevations above the present day river level. The main objective was to start geomorphological mapping, sedimentological description and age determination of the terraces (WG4). Samples were collected for age determination for both isochron burial age determination using the cosmogenic radionuclide pair of 26Al and 10Be and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL – with participation of a colleague from the OSL Laboratory of the University of Szeged).
