Between February 13 and 20, a team comprising 7 researchers (from Bucharest University and South-West University “Neofit Rilski”) conducted a field campaign in Pirin Mountain to retrieve two cores from Bezbog Lake. The lake is situated at an altitude of 2,239 meters in the Bezbozhki cirque, approximately 1 kilometer northeast of the peak of Bezbog (2,645 meters).
Using Eijkelkamp percussion corer equipment on the ice floor, the team successfully obtained two parallel sediment cores, each measuring 7 meters in length. These cores are offset by 0.5 meters in depth and are positioned approximately 1 meter apart. Due to the highly organic and uncompacted sediment, the first two meters were resampled at a lower water depth using a Beeker-type system.
The sampled cores will be used for various analyses, including paleo-ecological proxies (pollen, chironomid, diatoms; macro charcoal), biomarkers (leaf-wax dD and BrGDGTs), TOC and TN content, and AMS dating. These analyses will contribute to paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
